The idea
Factoring rewrites a polynomial as a product; it is multiplication run backward, and multiplying back is the check.
In practice
x² + 8x + 15 factors as (x + 3)(x + 5); multiply the factors back and the original returns.
Where people slip
An answer that fails the multiply-back check is not a factoring.
