The idea
A logarithm answers the exponent question: log base b of y is the exponent x with bˣ = y — written log_b(y) = x exactly when bˣ = y.
In practice
log₂(8) = 3, because 2³ = 8. The log hunts the exponent the way solving hunts the input.
