The idea
An exponential function has the form f(x) = a·bˣ with base b positive and not 1; each step in x multiplies the output by b.
In practice
f(x) = 3·2ˣ runs 3, 6, 12 at x = 0, 1, 2 — a constant ratio of 2, not a constant difference.
