The idea
A function is increasing on an interval when outputs rise as inputs rise within it, and decreasing when outputs fall as inputs rise.
In practice
f(x) = x² falls on (−∞, 0) and rises on (0, ∞) — read left to right, downhill then uphill, with the turn at the bottom.
