The idea
The domain of a function is the set of all allowed inputs; by convention it is the largest set of real numbers on which the rule is defined.
In practice
f(x) = 1/(x − 3) accepts every real number except 3, where the denominator dies: domain (−∞, 3) ∪ (3, ∞).
