The Retired -ic/-ous Naming System

The idea
An older naming system used -ic for a metal's higher charge and -ous for its lower charge instead of a Roman numeral.
In practice
"Stannous fluoride" on a toothpaste tube names SnF2, what current nomenclature calls tin(II) fluoride using the Stock system instead.
Where people slip
This system still appears on some commercial labels, but it is retired scientific practice, not a valid alternative to Roman-numeral naming.
