Naming Binary Ionic Compounds with Fixed-Charge Cations

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

A binary ionic compound with a fixed-charge cation is named by stating the metal's name, then the nonmetal's name changed to end in -ide.

Show

Sodium and chlorine combine as NaCl, named sodium chloride: sodium unchanged, chlorine's ending replaced by -ide.

Watch for

This method only works when the metal's charge is fixed and unambiguous — variable-charge metals need an added charge marker, covered next.
