The idea
Mass measures the amount of matter in an object, commonly determined by comparing it against a standard mass on a balance.
In practice
Placing a rock on a balance against reference masses tells you its mass without gravity entering the comparison.
Where people slip
A bathroom scale reading is often reported in mass units out of habit; the scale actually responds to gravitational force, not mass.
