A ketone contains a carbonyl group whose carbon bonds to two other carbons rather than to hydrogen, placing the carbonyl in a chain's interior.
In practice
Oxidizing 2-propanol's middle –OH yields propanone (acetone), a ketone with its carbonyl bonded to two carbons.
Where people slip
An alcohol's hydroxyl position determines which twin forms — a chain-end hydroxyl yields an aldehyde (Chem 2463), never a ketone.
