Halogen Oxidizing Strength Decreases Down the Group

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

Halogen oxidizing strength decreases down the group as electronegativity falls, so fluorine is the strongest halogen oxidizer and iodine the weakest.

Show

Chlorine oxidizes bromide ion to elemental bromine, but iodine cannot oxidize any of the halide ions above it.

Watch for

A weaker halogen oxidizer is not a nonoxidizer — iodine still oxidizes many metals, less readily than lighter neighbors.
