The Third Law of Thermodynamics

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

The third law of thermodynamics: a perfect crystal at absolute zero has exactly zero entropy, since only one microstate is accessible.

Show

A perfectly ordered crystal cooled to 0 K has no thermal motion and only one possible particle arrangement.

Watch for

Real crystals never reach exactly 0 K, so the third law names a reference point, not an achievable substance.
