The idea
Cancer typically develops as successive divisions accumulate mutations in proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, each generation carrying more damage than the last.
In practice
A cell with one damaged tumor suppressor gene may divide normally at first, but its daughters more readily acquire checkpoint-disabling mutations.
