The idea
p53 monitors genomic DNA for damage at the G1 checkpoint, halting the cycle and recruiting repair enzymes, or triggering apoptosis if damage cannot be repaired.
In practice
Rising p53 levels trigger p21 production, which enforces the halt by inhibiting cyclin-Cdk complexes.
Where people slip
A functional p53 protects the organism by killing a damaged cell outright when repair fails.
