The idea
Autocrine signaling releases a ligand that binds receptors on the same cell that released it, or on nearby cells of the same type.
In practice
A virus-infected cell can signal itself to undergo programmed cell death, destroying the virus along with the cell.
Where people slip
Autocrine signaling is self-directed by definition — it is not merely paracrine signaling renamed for a short distance.
