Organisms of one species form a population; populations in an area form a community; a community plus surroundings forms an ecosystem; ecosystems together form the biosphere.
In practice
Every pine tree in a forest is one population; its insects and plants sharing the area form the community.
Where people slip
A community includes only living populations; an ecosystem adds nonliving surroundings, like soil and rainfall, on top.
