Exocytosis is active transport that expels material from a cell by fusing a membrane-bound vesicle with the plasma membrane and releasing its contents outward.

A neuron releases neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft by exocytosis, fusing synaptic vesicles with its plasma membrane.
Watch for
Exocytosis and endocytosis move membrane material in opposite directions, but both spend cellular energy as active transport.
