The fluid mosaic model describes the plasma membrane as a shifting mosaic of phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins, and carbohydrates, none fixed in place.
In practice
Singer and Nicolson proposed the model in 1972, replacing an earlier view of a rigid, sandwich-like membrane.

A fluid membrane is not a loose one — it reseals after a fine needle punctures it.
