Compliance and Resistance in the Lungs

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

Lung compliance measures how easily lung tissue expands under pressure change, while airway resistance measures how much the airways themselves impede airflow; both jointly determine breathing effort.

Show

Stiffened, low-compliance lung tissue requires more pressure change to achieve the same inhaled volume.

Watch for

Low compliance and high resistance are distinct problems with different causes, even though both increase breathing effort.
