The idea
Muscles arrange in antagonistic pairs, where one muscle's contraction, per Bio 3115, moves a joint one way while its partner's contraction moves it back, producing apparent push and pull.
In practice
Biceps contraction flexes the elbow; triceps contraction on the opposite side extends it again.
Where people slip
"Muscles only pull," per Bio 3125, ignores that opposing pairs generate a joint's full range of motion.
