The idea
Epithelial tissue covers organs and lines body cavities in either a single layer, called simple epithelia, or multiple layers, called stratified epithelia, classified by cell shape.
In practice
Simple squamous epithelia line lung alveoli for fast diffusion; stratified squamous epithelia protect skin from abrasion.
Where people slip
Pseudostratified epithelia look layered from nuclei at different heights, but every cell still touches the base membrane as one layer.
