The idea
Inside an anther's microsporangium, mother cells divide by meiosis into microspores developing into pollen grains, each with a generative cell and a tube cell.
In practice
Upon germination, a grain's tube cell forms the pollen tube while the generative cell divides into two sperm cells.

The shed pollen grain lacks sperm; the generative cell forms two only as the tube grows toward the ovule.
