Stem Modifications

The idea
Modified stems include the horizontal rhizome, the fleshy corm, the ground-level stolon, the above-ground runner, the starch-storing tuber, and the layered bulb.
In practice
A strawberry plant spreads by runners; a potato is a tuber storing starch at the swollen end of a stolon.
Where people slip
Tendrils and thorns are aerial stem modifications too, for climbing support and defense, not roots or leaves as they appear.
