"A Tree Grows Taller by Pushing Up From the Base"

The idea
Picturing a tree's trunk lengthening from its base overstates a real process — growth in length happens only at the tips, per Bio 2513.
In practice
A tree's lower trunk, already differentiated, adds girth over the years but never grows longer once that section has matured.
Where people slip
This entry states the popular image; Bio 2517 gives the fixed-height consequence that follows.
