The idea
To enter a new host plant, a plant virus needs mechanical damage, such as an insect bite, lacking an active entry mechanism.
In practice
Aphids feeding on sap can carry a virus from an infected plant to a healthy one, a common transmission route.
Where people slip
A plant virus can also pass vertically from parent to offspring — infection is not always from an outside vector.
