Sympatric speciation can also proceed without chromosomal change, as when a subgroup shifts to a new resource or habitat and breeds increasingly among itself.
In practice
Cichlid fish in one lake diverging in diet and depth, breeding within their own feeding group, can sympatrically speciate over time.
