Autopolyploidy occurs when an individual carries multiple chromosome sets from its own species alone, immediately isolating it from the ancestral, non-polyploid population.

A plant producing diploid gametes instead of haploid ones can self-pollinate or mate with other autopolyploids to found an isolated tetraploid lineage.
Watch for
An autopolyploid individual can no longer produce fertile offspring with the ancestral population, isolating it in one generation.
