The idea
Gene targeting uses recombinant DNA vectors to disable or mutate a specific gene, letting researchers infer its function from the change, an approach called reverse genetics.
In practice
Deleting one gene and observing the lost function identifies what that gene normally does.
Where people slip
Reverse genetics starts from DNA sequence and works toward a phenotype — classical genetics starts from phenotype and works back to genotype.
