The idea
Calling a hypothesis a guess ignores that it must be grounded in prior observation and stated so a test can defeat it.
In practice
"Maybe the soil is compacted" follows from noticing standing water after rain; a guess needs no such basis.
Where people slip
Every hypothesis is provisional, but provisional is not the same as arbitrary.
