The idea
Epistasis occurs when one gene masks or alters a second gene's phenotype, producing an F2 ratio departing from the standard 9:3:3:1.
In practice
In mouse coat color, a pigment gene's recessive homozygous genotype blocks all pigment, masking a separate coat-pattern gene — an albino mouse's pattern genotype stays invisible.
Where people slip
Epistasis is an interaction between two genes' products, not a single gene's dominant-recessive pair.
