Artificial Intelligence / Unit 5 AI 0245 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Notation Is Compressed Language
Captions available
The idea
Formal notation is compressed language: every symbol is a name somebody chose, and every formula is a sentence that can be read aloud in words.
In practice
"b to the power d" is three characters carrying a nineteen-word sentence about choices and steps.
Where people slip
The standing rule: never let a formula pass unread — say its sentence before moving on.
