Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 8   AIL 0703 short lesson, about 20 seconds

What a Closed Form Demands

Captions available

The idea

A fixed form arrives with requirements the poet did not choose: so many lines, in such a metre, rhyming thus. Meeting them constrains what can be said. The constraint is the point, and an exam question may ask what a form's difficulty contributed to the poem.

In practice

The requirements come first.

Where people slip

The constraint is the poem's material.
