Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 8   AIL 0708 short lesson, about 20 seconds

What a Villanelle's Repetition Does

Captions available

The idea

A repeated line returns in a new context each time and changes meaning without changing words. That is the form's entire mechanism, and a question about a villanelle will usually ask about it. The reader's job is to notice what the surroundings have done to the line.

In practice

Same words, new surroundings.

Where people slip

Ask what the return has changed.
