Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 8   AIL 0710 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Ballad Stanza

Captions available

The idea

The common ballad stanza alternates four-beat and three-beat lines, the tetrameter and trimeter of unit six. The alternation is what makes the form singable, and it is why hymns share the shape. Count the beats across two lines rather than one to hear it.

In practice

Four beats, then three, alternating.

Where people slip

Count across two lines, not one.
