Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 8   AIL 0702 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Closed Form and Open Form

Captions available

The idea

A closed form follows a pattern set before the poem began. An open form invents its own shape as it goes. The glossary has no headword for either phrase; its term for the first family is regular verse, which it uses inside its rhyme-scheme definition.

In practice

Pattern inherited, or pattern invented.

Where people slip

The anchor says regular verse instead.
