Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 7   AIL 0602 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Anchor Makes Metaphor the Parent

Captions available

The idea

The glossary defines simile as a type of metaphor, personification as a form of metaphor, conceit as a metaphor that is elaborate, and metonymy as a form of metaphor. Four figures are treated as kinds of one thing. That hierarchy is the anchor's organising choice and it is worth knowing.

In practice

Four figures, one parent.

Where people slip

The anchor nests them; many texts do not.
