Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 7   AIL 0605 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Two Sides of a Comparison

Captions available

The idea

The subject being illuminated and the thing brought in to illuminate it need separate names. The standard pair is tenor for the subject and vehicle for the borrowed image. The glossary defines neither, so these are the standard senses, and the distinction makes effect questions answerable.

In practice

Tenor is the subject, vehicle the image.

Where people slip

Neither term is in the glossary.
