Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 5   AIL 0429 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Anchor Defines Irony Twice

Captions available

The idea

This course's anchor gives two different definitions of irony in two places. The glossary quotes Cicero, saying one thing and meaning another, then names verbal, dramatic and situational kinds. The Browning chapter instead calls irony a behaviour or event contrary to expectation. Those are not the same claim.

In practice

Two definitions, one anchor.

Where people slip

The divergence is real and is disclosed here.
