Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 5   AIL 0428 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Silent Listener

Captions available

The idea

Donne's poems, Browning's monologue and Swift's pamphlet all address someone who does not reply. The addressee shapes what the speaker chooses to say and to hide. Identifying the listener is therefore part of reading the voice, and the exam does ask who is being spoken to.

In practice

Identify who is being addressed.

Where people slip

The addressee shapes the concealment.
