Naming the Irony in This Poem

Captions available

The idea

By the glossary's scheme the poem runs on dramatic irony, since the reader knows what the Duke does not know he is revealing. His individual phrases also work as verbal irony where his praise indicts him. Both terms are available and the question will indicate which it wants.

In practice

Dramatic mainly, verbal in places.

Where people slip

Two kinds, both present.
