Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 5   AIL 0426 short lesson, about 20 seconds

How a Persona Is Signalled

Captions available

The idea

A persona is marked by the gap between what the voice asserts and what the text demonstrates. Swift's proposer never notices his own atrocity; the Duke never notices his confession. That unawareness inside the voice is the signal, and it is always placed for the reader to catch.

In practice

The voice never notices itself.

Where people slip

Unawareness is the marker.
