Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 5 AIL 0403 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Voice and Persona
Captions available
The idea
Voice names the manner in which a speaker speaks; persona names a speaker deliberately adopted and distinct from the writer. The glossary defines neither, so both are used in their standard senses. Swift's public-spirited economist from the last unit is a persona in exactly this sense.
In practice
Persona is a voice put on.
Where people slip
The glossary defines neither term.
