The Dramatic Monologue

Captions available

The idea

The glossary defines a dramatic monologue as a poem dramatic because it is a speech presented to an audience, usually of one person, and a monologue because no other character talks. Everything the reader learns arrives through one speaker who cannot be cross-examined.

In practice

One speaker, one listener, no reply.

Where people slip

All evidence passes through the speaker.
