The idea
The glossary defines satire as a form in which a writer pokes fun at aspects of his society, especially people and institutions the author thinks corrupt and needing change. Satire has a target and a purpose. That purposefulness is what separates it from mere mockery.
In practice
Satire wants something changed.
Where people slip
A target and a purpose, both.
