Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 4   AIL 0319 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Lexicon: Hyperbole

The idea

The glossary calls hyperbole a metaphor built on exaggeration, quoting a promise to walk a million miles for one smile. Overstatement can be comic, passionate or contemptuous depending on what is exaggerated, so hyperbole names a technique rather than settling an attitude by itself.

In practice

Exaggeration names a method.

Where people slip

Hyperbole alone fixes no attitude.
