Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 4   AIL 0314 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Lexicon: Situational Irony

Captions available

The idea

Situational irony is a trope where accidental events fall out oddly appropriately. The glossary's example is the poetic justice of a pickpocket having his own pocket picked. Like dramatic irony this describes events rather than a writer's manner, so it rarely answers a tone question.

In practice

Events that fall out fittingly.

Where people slip

Events again, not manner.
