"Brave" Means Defy

Captions available

The idea

The couplet of that same sonnet says nothing withstands Time's scythe "Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence". Here brave is a verb meaning to defy or face down. One poem, one word, two senses, and only the grammar and the object separate them.

In practice

Now the word is a verb.

Where people slip

Same poem, different sense.
