Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 3   AIL 0222 short lesson, about 20 seconds

"Brave" Means Splendid

Captions available

The idea

Sonnet twelve watches the poet "see the brave day sunk in hideous night". Brave means fine or splendid, describing the day. No courage is attributed to daylight. The sense survives in the phrase brave show, and the adjective's position beside day is what fixes it.

In practice

The brave day is a fine day.

Where people slip

Daylight is not being called courageous.
