Sheridan's "Humours": Temperament
Captions available
The idea
Sir Peter complains that his wife "contradicts all my Humours". A humour is a disposition or mood, from the old physiology of bodily fluids governing temperament. Nothing comic is meant. She crosses his moods, and the modern sense of the word would make the line unreadable.
In practice
A humour is a mood, not a joke.
Where people slip
Nothing in this line is funny.
