Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 3   AIL 0215 short lesson, about 20 seconds

"Still" Means Continually

Captions available

The idea

Sonnet five ends "But flowers distill'd, though they with winter meet, Leese but their show; their substance still lives sweet". Still means always or continually. The distilled flower goes on living sweetly, and the modern sense of nevertheless would empty the couplet of its claim.

In practice

Still means always, here.

Where people slip

This is the sense most often missed.
