Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 3   AIL 0202 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Why the Dictionary Is the Wrong Tool

Captions available

The idea

A dictionary lists every sense a word has ever carried, with no ranking for the line in front of you. Four of five options may appear in it. The passage ranks them, and nothing else does, which is why the reading has to come before the recall.

In practice

A dictionary ranks nothing for you.

Where people slip

All the wrong options are real senses.
